Scoil Cholmcille Naofa-the beginning
Scoil Cholmcille Naofa opened its doors to pupils on the 15th of December 1941. It had a total of 107 pupils on the roll, 66 boys and 47 girls. There were 4 teachers with Mr. Raftery as Principal.
There were 10 classes at that time, junior infants to 8th class. There were only 3 classrooms in the school so two teachers taught side by side in the room that is now Ms Mc Cormack's room.
There was an open fire in each classroom and boys were expected to bring in a sod of turf each day.
In the early days of Castlegar NS summer holidays consisted of just 4 weeks during the month of August. By 1955, the school closed for six weeks from mid July to the end of August.
During the 40’s and 50’s, very few students continued their education into secondary school, that is perhaps the reason why there was a7th and 8th class in primary school. Although only a small number of pupils attended these classes, they were a great success. But by the end of the 1950’s there was no longer an 8th class in Scoil Cholmcille Naofa, 7th class ceased to exist in 1961.
Since then Castlegar NS has continued to expand with four extensions being built over the years and a fifth currently in the pipeline.
